What beach in Southern California would offer the best chances of seeing dolphins or whales?

August 6, 2010 - 1:35 pm 5 Comments

I’m going in early December. Anywhere along the coast from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo would work. I would also like to know about any beaches that are good for beach combing and/or taking pictures.

I almost always see dolphins when I go up to Carpinteria. It’s unusual when I DON’T see some.

They also have decent beach combing. There are some EXCELLENT tide pools on the southern part of Carpinteria State Beach.

What is the beach in southern California where you can sunbathe with seals?

August 6, 2010 - 1:35 pm 3 Comments

I was googling exciting day trips in southern California and found information about a public beach below San Diego (I think), where seals tend to show up to sunbathe. I didn’t save the page and can’t find it now. Anyone know the spot?

not "with" the seals

you watch them from a distance

it’s in La Jolla – the old children’s pool

What are the distances to the oil platform from both ends of the beach?

August 6, 2010 - 1:19 pm 1 Comment

To determine the distance to an oil platform in the Atlantic Ocean from both ends of a beach, a surveyor measures the angle to the platform from each end of the beach. The angle made with the shoreline from one end of the beach is 83 degrees, from the other end 78.6 degrees. If the beach is 950 yards long, what are the distances to the oil platform from both ends of the beach?

First angle: 83 degrees
Second angle: 78.6 degrees
Third angle: 21.4 degrees

Ratio of first angle to third angle:
3.738317757 : 1
Multiply by 950 to get distance of side across from each angle:
3551.401869 yards : 950 yards

Now do the same with second angle…

Ratio of second angle to third angle:
3.672897196 : 1
Multiply by 950 to get distance of side across from each angle:
3489.252336 yards : 950 yards

3551.401869 yards
3489.252336 yards

My family & I are planning a daytrip to Daytona Beach in early December. Would really like to go somewhere where you can rent a beach umbrella (family member has sun issues) but will make do without.

Hello! You may want to visit the following website as it is very informative. I’m from the general area. One thing is for sure, stay within the guidelines of the posted signs. I have listed a site for you to research. Goodluck :)

How to keep a 3 month happy at the beach?

August 6, 2010 - 1:13 pm 6 Comments

I was just wondering if anyone else has taken their 3 month old to the beach. My son is very layed back and is pretty much happy anywhere. It’s just that we’re going to the beach next weekend for 3 days and I was just wondering when we’re on the beach what all should I bring and how can I make sure he’s happy and not too uncomfortable? Do I need to feed him more often when it’s hot outside?

I live next to the beach and I take my 3 month old there all the time.
1) take a beach towel for him to help prevent sand getting on him ( which is going to happen anyway)
2) buy a florr fun mat. The baby lays on this which is placed on top of the beach towel and should be entertanied.
3) You need a beach umbrella and sun screen cause they will break out in a nasty rash with too much sun
4) Resist the urge to the baby up all day else you wont enjoy yourself.
ENJOY!

How much on average do you think a simple beach wedding costs?

August 6, 2010 - 1:13 pm 4 Comments

I live in Alabama, Birmingham. I really want to have a beach wedding. I plan on having it somewhere in Florida seeing how it has the closest beaches. I just want it simple, being at the beach is gorgious enough in my opinion! I plan on having nice chairs, not metal ugly ones, a few ribbons, an arch, some fake flowers, don’t want em to wilt! I understand getting people down there might be a problem, gas! Im planning on getting married in April 2011.

.Depends on where you have it. I live in Fort Walton Beach, FL and there are a few beach wedding services here (Barefoot Weddings is one, for example). Use your search engine and look up some places and call or email for pricing. You’ve got great beaches from Pensacola to Panama City to work with.

Good luck and congrats!

What Are The Requirements For A Beach Reception?

August 6, 2010 - 1:13 pm 2 Comments

My fiance and I are planning to have our wedding reception on the beach (really informal, maybe bonfire and pot roast) and were wondering who we need to talk to about permits (if we need permits) and renting space on the beach. Any suggestions?

It really depends on the town/city/state where the beach is. First and foremost, you have to check with the local parks department and see if you’re allowed to use the beach for private events. I know that many beaches in my area, don’t allow for this to happen, unless it’s for a town function. It’s the same for parks here, which is why I never realized it was so popular to have park weddings, until I came on YA.

I know, my friend looked into renting a old fashioned, in closed beach pavilion in our area. It’s right on the beach. But, it was SO expensive. She had to rent the space, which was like $2,000. Then, she had to hire a police officer (through the town) at their normal hourly rate, which was like $50 an hour. The officer had to be present for the wedding and reception.

In addition, she was not allowed to make her own food. Since the wedding was being held in a public town owned space, it had to meet the same health requirements as restaurants. So, she needed to hire a licensed caterer and obtain additional permits for serving food and liquor

There was also some business about being able to insure the event in case of an emergency. By that point, everything was adding up!! She decided to skip this idea…………she was better using an all-inclusive venue, it ended up being cheaper.

But, every area is different. In some places, the cost to use the beach and obtain the permits is cheap. You need to make some phone calls, that’s your best bet.
