How do i go about starting my own cake decorating business?

August 12, 2010 - 2:25 am 5 Comments

I’ve self taught myself on how to do some cake decorating and hope to go back to school for some formal training, but i’m curious what materials i would need and any other information i would need to start a sucessful cake decorating business. Thanks!

if you go to a Michael’s or Hobby Lobby for Wilton cake deco training they will give you a full supply list of what supplies you can start with…also, if you complete all the classes (3 levels of 4 a piece), and you’re good, you can often get a part time job teaching the classes
then you can use that foundation of practice and teaching to build your business
please remember that there are two ways to be a cake decorator – use your own, refined, delicious and simple recipes for cakes or you can buy freshly baked and frozen cakes from your local grocery bakery (undecorated)

good luck! :)

Decorating a bathroom to go with a patriotic bedroom?

August 6, 2010 - 1:58 pm 2 Comments

I’m moving into a new house and am decorating my bedroom in a patriotic/americana type theme. I don’t want to copy that in the master bathroom but I would like some ideas on what would look good with that. Thanks for all ideas!

The walls are nuetral and the towel racks and floor are all wood. There is a garden tub in one corner, a stand up shower in the other and two separate vanities.
Thank you bookluvr! You really caught the "I’m not remodeling, I’m decorating" idea. I loved the website too! Thanks!

How about a stars and moon type theme or an ocean type theme, the blue from either would carry over the blue from your bedroom, but still be different, you don’t have to go with the generic theme stuff they sell at the box stores either you can paint the walls a shade of blue you like and free hand or stencil the designs you like, and anything with a blue theme would be good for a master bath because blue is a relaxation color, and that’s always good if you have a garden tub ;) . other than that maybe just look at some magazines or websites with pics and see what appeals to you.

Very big bedroom decorating/moving in tips?

August 5, 2010 - 4:53 pm 9 Comments

I am a high school sophomore and I have a sister who will be graduating and moving out this year. In my house there is a very big room (14′ 7.5" X 39′ 3") acroos the stairway from my room.It also has a small "notch" off of it that measures 4’4" X 7′ 5".My parents have agreed to let me move into it when my sister leaves. How should I decorate such a large space? It also only has one window so what are some good ways to keep it looking bright. I was planning on painting it a pale yellow. The floors are linoleum (sp?). If anyone has ANY tips on decorating such a large space please share. Also, it does not have a built in closet. How could I put a closet in it without having to do any construction? Any tips would be great!!!! also, any websites that would help me would be great!

I would definetly keep the colors calm, yet light, to keep the room well lit. As for the closet, you can go to Ikea or somewhere similar and get a stand-alone closet. They tend to be smaller, but look around. As for linoleum, I never liked it…maybe an area rug to cover at least some of it.

What are some good ideas for decorating for a class reunion for high school?

August 5, 2010 - 4:53 pm 1 Comment

The reason I’m asking is because my high school class does not want to use streamers and balloons and I’m not used to decorating without those things. Can you give me any ideas that will be helpful?

Flowers or plants, maybe a banner…

How can you determine your decorating style?

August 5, 2010 - 4:53 pm 2 Comments

I’m moving and want my new house to look and feel cohesive, but I only have a vague idea about decorating and need some suggestions for books or websites that will help me identify my style so that I can express it to an interior designer or decorator.

Just find pictures of things that you like in magazines. Furniture is either traditional, contemporary or a mix. Once you show the things you like to a decorator, he or she will know the look you are after. Don’t worry about doing what is "in style", instead look for things that you love to look at and make you happy. I have lots of art in my house. I used to buy paintings that would MATCH a room but have begun buying a print or picture that I love to look at instead. No reason to be surrounded by things in your home that don’t make you happy to look at. When you thumb through magazines you’ll stop on the pages you like and eventually fine tune your style.

Anyone have any ideas on decorating a shelf?

August 5, 2010 - 3:48 pm 4 Comments

I am completely stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions for decorating one? It has three shelves on it, it is glass and it is on the wall to the left in my living room. Right now, all it has on it is a etched glass that lights up and changes colours and that is not going to stay there.

If you have any collections of anything you could put them up there. My shelves on my walls have a few pictures of my husband and children, candles and unique candle holders, i have one with some books on it, a small bamboo plant in a decorative vase with decoritive rocks in it. Just experiment with things you already have and see what you like. You can always buy a few neat looking nick nacks at the local dollar store and see what you like best!! Good Luck and I really hope this helps!!

what are unique ideas for decorating a teenage girl’s bedroom?

August 5, 2010 - 3:34 pm 2 Comments

i need some unique and fun ideas for decorating my 13 year old sister’s bedroom. it isn’t too big of a space, with only one small window…the ceilings are about 7ft. high, so no loft type furniture.

pictures, or websites would be great :)
please nothing too expensive!

thank you again!
as i mentioned…there is only one small window, so painting the walls black wouldn’t work. but thank you for your suggestion!

Try using this picture: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4a/A_smoky_day_at_the_Sugar_Bowl–Hupa.jpg

Well, I like it anyway.
