August 6, 2010 - 1:39 pm 1 Comment

I am trainee level graphic designer. i want to know that what is graphic design? & what are all the elements of graphic design?. I am always strumbled with choosing correct font for right place & choosing colors, give me some suggestions or tips for overcome from my problem. generally how to design a ad?. please give the elabrate answer that will clarify my all doubts.

please help me.

my heartful thanks to those who all answer to my question.

My favorite subject! I’m a freelance Graphic Designer. This is a very complex question I will try to answer as well as I can.

First of all…Graphic design is not art. It’s not self-serving as fine art is.

Graphic design is visually & effectively conveying a message to the general population (ads, business cards, letter heads, magazines, etc). It persuades and influences and informs the public.

There are several things that you to consider when designing: what does your client want to convey? Who is their target audience (teens, adults, children, etc.)? Then of course there are context, emotion, spirituality, etc.

There is so much to consider when you’re designing! But that shouldn’t scare you off. It’s so much fun! Taking all of it into consideration is key. This helps when you’re considering font, color, etc. For example: If you’re designing an ad for a wedding planner–what is it that they want to get across? obviously romance, love and forever. So there are emotions of love, and how do you convey love? What colors would you use? White, red, pink. right? Then you have font…romance is not heavy, it’s light and airy and falling in love is happy… you’d want to use a happy, elegant font.

That’s just one example. You could do this with each client you have.

Consider their field. I have a client who is a coffee roaster…caffeine makes you hyper so I use a bold, "catch me" font in her ads. I also have a client who is a jewelry and accessories supplier. Her stuff is geared more toward women…so I use girly fonts.

Graphic design is a lot of asking questions! Feel free to email me with more specific questions!

What would a graphic design work incorporating type and images be called?

August 6, 2010 - 1:39 pm 1 Comment

I am doing a workshop on graphic design and I am having a little trouble on terminology. I have seen type+image works called "print," but are they only referred to as "print" if they are intended to be printed out? Then what is "print design?" I considered the word "graphic," but I think that might be too broad and general, as it could incorporate simply vector images and whatnot.

Simply ‘ART’! It is also called Ad Art or Graphic Art.
A print is the physical form containing the Art. It is still art weather it is printed, digital, sketched, drawn or painted if it has a commercial intent it is Art.

How to design an Light Aircraft Cockpit?

August 6, 2010 - 1:37 pm 1 Comment

Good day!

I would like to ask if anyone knows good reference materials or links for light aircraft cockpit lay-outing. That should include where to properly place instruments in accordance to air laws and pilot advantages. I am planning to use the materials for my upcoming aircraft design subjects in college.

Thank you very much.

What design strategies are used by furniture designers?

August 6, 2010 - 1:37 pm 1 Comment

Question:
You are to identify and discuss a range of design strategies used by furniture designers. "Any help would be gladly appreciated", as to i don’t know anything about this.

The same as a Poet or a writer or an Artist.
The design strategies come automatically.Once they click they become fashion. In furniture the basic is the same as has been prevelent ages ago.The Tables are not turned against you, chairs still require its four legs (only it has become important politically) and the bed is not a 3 tier system..Things are just added from here and there. The subject matter of an antique piece is just added with a flourish in the modern times. In furniture particularly,it’s a recycle only. What is out of date today comes into vogue after a decade.

What design can you make out of multiple small shapes that are the same size and shape?

August 6, 2010 - 1:37 pm 2 Comments

Hi. I have to make one big shape out of small shapes that are all the same shape and size for my graphic design class. I was thinking of a tree made with triangles but someone already took it. Any suggestions?

Hopefully you will understand what I am meaning…
can you use those shapes for the background and use the empty spaces for your work of art? In other words, if you want to make a ‘tree’… can you make the tree out of your background with those shapes as the borders? [kind of a reverse technique].
Kinda hard when i don’t have the shapes to look at and tinker with myself. Best of luck!

What can you do for a career in graphic design?

August 6, 2010 - 1:37 pm 4 Comments

I’m thinking about majoring in graphic design. When you have a career in graphic design, do you have to illustrate and design on your own using the computer or can you use the help from the computer to design and illustrate?
Also, what kinds of careers are there for graphic design?

As a graphic designer, you can use whatever tools are necessary to accomplish the project. Most graphic designers use a computer these days. But they also incorporate traditional illustration, photography, etc.

The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook contains a lot of good information about careers in graphic design.

How to find a summer set design job for a high school student?

August 6, 2010 - 1:22 pm 1 Comment

During the summer I would like to work backstage at a set design type job. Without any direct connections how can I find a job like such preferably with some pay?

I am definitely not thinking of upscale set designs such as Broadway plays but maybe summer theater camps that need set work done. Do such summer jobs even exist? I hope.

I am interested in design, mostly interior. Any suggestions of interesting job or intern type of things I can do during the summer?

I am 15 years old and live outside of NYC.

If there is a community theater in your area, volunteer there. Or your local community college. You may not get paid, but if you do that this summer, you can put something on a resume and maybe get paid next summer.

What design of tattoo would go well with a rose on my back shoulder blade?

August 6, 2010 - 1:22 pm 3 Comments

It is horizontal and has a long stem going down part of my back. I am only thinking of adding to the design or just getting something on my other shoulder, if I’m not able to think of ideas for a complete backpiece. Would an old school winged heart work with a long stem rose? If you have any pics that would help! Thanks

I would go with some musical notes if all you’re going on is the look of it. Otherwise it shouldn’t matter if you actually want it on there for any other reason.

What design should I make for an egg drop project?

August 6, 2010 - 1:22 pm 1 Comment

I need to make the design as light and small as possible that an egg will be inside and I cannot use styrofoam, bubble wrap, packaging peanuts, balloons, parachutes, or anything else that will hinder the free fall of the egg. It will be dropped about 15 feet. Any idea?

Well the first thing that comes to mind is to use double or triple strength Jello. try it in 3 layers. another idea is ti use canned expanding foam unless that is not an allowable substance. good luck

Ecological design – Is it the same as design for sustainability?

August 6, 2010 - 1:22 pm 3 Comments

Has anyone noticed that
‘design (and policy/planning/ etc) for sustainability’
uses the old destructive paradigms of growth economics, toxic materials, and single function products, whereas ‘ecological design’ use PROCESSES of design and problem solving that really push green practice to a new standard ?

not the same at all…

designing for sustainability sounds like it’s designed to sustain growth. that’s not desirable in a world of finite resources. small wonder that it stresses monocultures, and limits flexibility and imagination. but it does provide for convenience and reliance. existing products are refined with a nod toward nature, but they still exist and still consume!

designing ecologically, for instance using principles of permaculture, allows for a greater use of PROBLEM SOLVING and employs objects and landscapes that serve multiple functions. this increases diversity and ability to change.

it also employs knowledge and experience from varied disciplines, giving MANY people a share in the ownership of said design. ownership breeds pride, and continued thinking and adapting. nature and humans in harmony using sound ideas: THIS is part of the process, part of the new standard you speak of!
