Im in charge of designing and writing up a contents page for a magazine?

August 6, 2010 - 2:02 pm 1 Comment

Im in charge of designing and writing up a contents page for a magazine and i don’t no how to do it. Can someone please tell me what do; how to write it up; what I can do to make it look extra special ; and any tips to help me.

Have a look at several different mags and see how they’ve dealt with it.A contents list needs to be clear and concise so no fancy fonts just plain writing. The other things you put on that page, pics etc should be connected to the various articles in your contents list and here is were you can get creative as to where or how you lay them out.

XHTML is coming around as a fusion between HTML and XML.
But HTML and CSS are the essentials.

Do I have to be good in art to pursue interior designing as a career?

August 5, 2010 - 8:19 pm 3 Comments

I suck at drawing, painting, sculpture, print-making, sketching or anything to do with art. But I’m very interested in interior designing. I like to makeover rooms in my head and think about what an ideal house would look like. Will my handicap in art keep me from being successful in the interior designing field?
And also, what all qualifications do you need to get into interior designing? Can you recommend some college and high school courses I can take?
I’ve just finished my sophomore year in high school, and I’ve started thinking about my future. I’m a straight-A student, but I’m not really interested in medicine, engineering, IT or other "scholarly" stuff like that. My talent in the art room is limited, but I’m very creative. (I’m also good at creative writing such as short stories and poems etc.) So, yeah, I’m creative; I can think out of the box. And I’m very interested in interior designing.
Well, those are the facts. I would love some good advice on this subject.

Hi, I think as long as you have an eye, thats what matters. I never went to school for design, but I had great training under a designer. I can’t sketch or do CAD, but I can do a room on graph paper. You will need to be decent at math and be able to measure properly. You will need to understand fabrics and other materials and their uses and drawbacks. Passion and talent in design is more important than being a typical artist. Your rooms are your art, and as long as you can pull them together to make you and the client happy, that’s all that matters. .
p.s. most designers I’ve met are crazy (I am the exception) and very difficult to work for. If you can learn from someone with great talent, hang in there as long as you can and soak up all of their knowledge. I would start looking at local designers whose work you admire and start talking to them now. When you are ready they might be happy to mentor you. Good Luck

I think it´s possible and I think there is a connection to do both. Sure not all countries have a big market for product designing, but most of them, all which produce new products. now especially the east european countries which are economicly developing quick:

What is the latest way of designing a web page?

August 5, 2010 - 7:51 pm 4 Comments

I have started web designing with HTML recently but heard that its no more used.
So plz tell me what is the latest way of designing a web page?

How in depth are you planning to go? You really could use word if you like, 2007 isn’t bad but there are definitely much, much better options out there. There isn’t really a need to design a website entirely use html. or source code. Knowing XML (extensible markup language) very well can be very advantageous and make you very marketable though! Which is similar to html in many ways.

You can get Microsoft Visual Studios to create a website as well. With .aspx web forms you have several options as adding link/calculate buttons or drop down menus as well as being able to have tales for things like merchandise and easy reference, just to name a few! (but you will need to know access or visual basic to some extent) They offer a 90 day trial of their 2008 pro version.
Another benefit of asp is that you can still make great use of your html capabilities or, if you want you can stay strictly in design view

There is also Dreamweaver which is very user friendly but I have almost zero experience with it.

Mind you, I have very limited experience as I have only dabbled a bit on my own and taken one web management course (which was entirely about web design either!). But it is fun and you do feel a sense of accomplishment when you create a website and impress friends and family :)

What size should fonts be on letterheads and envelopes when designing in Illustrator?

August 5, 2010 - 7:51 pm 1 Comment

I am designing letterhead and envelope in Illustrator, what is the best size for fonts on each? Address’s on envelopes and address, phone, fax, email, website on letterhead?

Depends on choice of font. For the bold line on a LH, never larger than 18 pt, and more often it was 14 or 16 pt. 11/12 for the normal font after that. All text centered, 1/2 inch top margin. Often the phone number centered, as last line bold and 10 pt. Today, I guess, that last line would be italic at the same size as address with a bullet then web address.

For the return address: 10 pt bold on company name
11 /13 normal for the rest. The block of text is centered with the longest line flushed to the margin.

That is assuming all serif font selection.

The white margin is significant on printed pieces. The print shop needs room to let their machine grip the paper. 18 pt on the envelope. 24 pt on the LH.
