Software to draw floorplans (similar to paint)?

August 5, 2010 - 2:31 pm 3 Comments

I am looking for a software that allows me to draw a floorplan. I have downloaded a couple but they are trial versions or they do not allow me to save it into file that can be read on any computer. I am looking for free software that allows me to draw a simple floorplan, and can save the file into .pdf, MS word, .bmp or .jpeg.

Google’s free Sketch Up may be ideal:

Even though it can do 3D, it’s easy to draw in 2D as well.

I got information from specific companies by contacting them directly. I was interested in a science lab, so I contacted all the science supply companies I knew of. Try contacting the publishers of catalogs for your grade level or class subject.

I’m interested in building a clubhouse, 24′X36′, w/ a fireplace/grill, sinks, etc, any floorplans avail ?

Thats 864 sq.ft..If you do it yourself it should run you $25 sq.ft.($21600) for materials. But it really depends on what you build it out of ( slab, pier&beam, brick, straw, tin, mud, wattel) and how you are going to handel your plumbing, and what kind of fireplace. So you could go as high as $86400($100 per sq ft. House plans are everywhere(library, browse HD or Lowes)

And in the bathroom, where the shower is, is just a rectangle with an X, does that mean its just a shower and not a tub? Or is this some secret code for something else? Or am I just staring at floor plans for too long and am starting to get dizzy?

I would say a RECTANGLE would be a shower with a tub. A SQUARE would be a stand up shower.
If you need to know, call them and ask. I find that floor plans suck. They’re never quite accurate. They’ll make the kitchen look as big as the living room when in reality you can’t open the fridge door. You can try to guess by footages in the house… Like if the room is 6 feet across there is likely a tub.
Half of the time they’re just drawn up by hand so they’re never accurate. View it or call and ask.

Good Luck!
