What exactly are the steps I need to take to become a licensed cake decorator out of my home?

August 6, 2010 - 1:25 pm 1 Comment

Do I just need to get a Michigan food license, and find a place (for ex., a church kitchen) to do my cakes out of? (or vice versa?) I do not have the means right now to have a seperate kitchen out of my home. Has anybody else done this? I have looked at the state of agriculture web site, but found it gives little information.
I have worked over 14 years in various bakeries, so I do know the business very well. Just need to make it my own now.

I would take some formal classes/training..Try you local community college OR board of education… Work part-time at the local grocery store bakery. I looked up the Macomb County rules/regulations reguarding home-based food business and you may need to "rent" or "use" a licensed kitchen… Like a rental hall… or VFW hall, church, school kichen etc… Since any room that leads to sleeping quarters or living quarters cannot be considered for catering/food preparation…

What is a good site to go to when you want to look at new home colors schemes?

anyone know what type of home business that require a low start up cost?

I’m 34 woman, just divorced, no kids. I’m tired living in FL and would like to relocate to other city in Northern East Coast. I don’t really have much money but I do want to start a home business or online business to have a better living. I am a cake decorator but also have passion on fashion. Anyone have an idea what kind of business should I start? For info I prefer something not related to children and senior. Please help..Your answer will be very helpful for me.

Passion for fashion bet you can make a rhyme anytime..but seriously, Feel free to email me through Yahoo Answers if you have any questions on what I do to make money at home
(number1 thing) I sell items on the Internet, basically I sold extra items that I had around the house or I go to yard sales, flea markets, discount bins at my local stores, buy things from family and friends and resell the items on the Internet. I sell small items on a international "auction site" and larger items at a local "auction site.
(2) I have a website and a blog that makes me money, I just designed a website about something I know about and also the blog is related to my website. This took me the most amount of effort and time but started paying for themselves after about three months.
(3) I also make a little extra money by doing simple things like "reading emails", I spend about 1/2 to an hour a night doing this.
I will post some links that were helpful to me below.

i want to start a home based baking business, is this legal?

August 6, 2010 - 1:25 pm 1 Comment

I want to know what are the details about me starting a home based baking business. I am a cake decorator, and a current pastry arts major in culinary school. I make wedding cakes birthday cakes cookies and all sorts of pastries and baked treats. I would like to know if anyone has had success with starting this type of business from my home kitchen. I live in Las Vegas, has anyone started a baking business from their home in Vegas?

First and foremost, you will likely need to have your kitchen inspected for health code. Your state may require a business license, it may not. Check with your state attorney general’s office or your state’s official website to find out if you need a license to operate a baking business from your home kitchen. If you do, expect periodic inspections and regulations to be enforced.

after making sure all the legal things are taken care of, it’s time to start planning and marketing.

Decide what kinds of baked goods you will supply. Your decision may weigh upon the baking facilities available to you, your baking experience and the amount of time you have to dedicate to the business.

Think of a name for your home baking business and register it. The cost of licensing is usually minimal and it will allow you to maintain a business bank account as well as take advantage of wholesale supply discounts.

Reel in customers. Bring sample baked goods to local offices, civic clubs, delicatessens, restaurants and even catering firms and give samples, discounts and incentives to get them to try you. These are the types of accounts that result in consistent orders and high volume profits.

Keep up with needed supplies. You’ll likely want to replenish perishables weekly and staples monthly, preferably through a food co-op or a wholesale baking supply vendor. You’ll also need to keep extra cake pans, spatulas, and other bake ware in case of mistakes or mishaps.

You’ll need to keep close track of money circulation. This process also includes tracking the cost of supplies to do business, advertising fees and other direct or indirect operating expenses that you may be able to deduct at tax time to reduce your tax liability. Without adequate records at the time such expenses are incurred, you won’t be able to make these claims later on. Good, straight books are worth their weight in gold! They help keep you organize and protect you from audits.

I’d also look into insurance, especially if you plan to run it out of your home.

I’d check with your city’s website:

or

and also your state’s site:

I need help finding a designer/decorator for my updated Preston Hollow ranch style home. I really like the clean, transitional look – anything from Restoration Hardware, William Sonoma Home, Pottery Barn, etc… Does anyone have suggestions for people in Dallas?

how can i become a painter and decorator?

August 6, 2010 - 1:06 pm 4 Comments

the only experience i have is of painting and decorating my own home but no professional experience. How could i go about getting work experience, and should i do a college course? Can you make decent money as a painter/decorator? Eventually I’d like to work for myself.

Starting in your own home is not a bad place to start.
After all you have to be able to live with the work every day, which then leads you to making sure you keep a good standard for clients
Try see what courses are available and go from there,at the moment due to the credit crunch there is work around but it is all being very competetively priced ..

You can make money but your standards now have to be super high as clients can pick and choose who they want to do the work.
Once you have a few jobs behind you it helps to keep records, preferably pics to show what you can do

I’d like to take pics of my living room and bed room & send to an interior decorator?

Is there a web site where you can take pics of your home then send them in to have an interior decorator look at them & tell you how to redecorate that certin room?

You can do that. The website is http://www.designerathome.com/. You pick a room you want to decorate; answer a short online questionnaire about the room’s purpose and your preferences; and send in room measurements, photos and $250. Two weeks later, you get a design scheme, like paint-by-numbers for your room. You take the job from there.
