Anyone know any good sites for dog house plans?

August 6, 2010 - 2:04 pm 3 Comments

I have two rather large dogs and after pricing out prebuilt doghouses I thought well geez I can do this myself for a lot less $. Both of my dogs are 100+ lbs and I’m afraid if I try on my own plans it won’t be sturdy enough. Thanks!

When building your dog house, make sure you don’t use pressure treated wood anywhere that the dog could chew it – it’s treated with arsenic and other toxins. Also, if your dog’s going to be out in cold weather, it should be just big enough for him to get in, turn around and lie down. That way his body heat can keep him warm. If it’s a warm weather shelter, it can be larger. Roof it like you would a house, with tar paper and shingles. Don’t use anything inside (like carpet) that will be a breeding ground for fleas and ticks unless you can replace it often. Some people use cedar chips, but any bedding you choose should be replaced immediately if it gets wet.

Can you be sued for using someones house plans?

I found a really nice house online but it costs money to download the pdf or CAD. If you were to draw it out on paper and use it can you be sued? If yes, can you make miner changes and not be sued?

The architect will sue you. No question. You can’t use the plans anyway, your building department will require the architects stamp on every page. And several pages will end up having to be redrawn (just my experience), and fresh stamps applied.

Check out the link below. The HousePlanShop has a good website. You can search home home plan style using the links on the left side of the home page, or use the search tool to narrow your search a bit. You can put in the width and depth of your lot, number of desired bedrooms, floors. etc. If you want to get more specific and include a style or other special features like a foundation type or garage, click on the link for the advanced search. It is found on the home page next to the form for the simple search. We found our home plans on this site as well as lots of helpful building info in the resource section. Good customer service too.

Where does Habitat for Humanity get their house plans?

August 6, 2010 - 2:03 pm 2 Comments

I am just starting out as an architect and was wondering if it would be possible to donate one of my plans to Habitat for Humanity to help my resume look better?

Contact operation Noah in New Orleans. They have a website and they are still there building homes, they could give you some info, you could also donate some drawings for churches, mine just got some donated. You could contact the southern batist convention. Our Church was remodeling and building on an architect came and gave some suggestions. His advice was greatly appreciated and used by the way.

Does anyone have any good resources for free downloadable house plans?

We are thinking of building and need ideas for floor plans. I’ve searched the internet a little, but most plans I see you have to pay for.

My wife and I bought blueprints for our house at eplans.com. Great selection of house plans. Good customer service when you call the #, and the best return policy we could find. Happy hunting.

Are there any websites that have house plans with a general estimated building cost?

August 5, 2010 - 8:25 pm 5 Comments

I actually knew one a few months ago, but my computer ate my bookmark and now I cant find it. I dont need a to-the-penny estimate…I’m just trying to find out about how much house I can actually afford to build.
Thank you.
I meant a free one…and I know they exist, I’m just not sure where anymore. I’m not ready to commit to spending money yet, i’m not even sure if I’ll be able to do this.

Ask local contractors, real estate agents, and appraisers for the cost to build whatever it is that you have in mind. They can give you at least an average "cost per square foot" for construction in your area.

Where can I find free online software for making house plans?

We are purchasing a house that has already been started, but only the stud walls are up. I don’t want to spend more money than needed and I have been told that there are free sites online to help. Thanks:)

try Google Sketch
When your done, if your drawing your house you can add it to google earth, or you can just sketch up your dream home in 3D

If your talking about blue prints, i doubt you find that for free online.

What should be analyzed when comparing house plans?

August 5, 2010 - 3:16 pm 2 Comments

My students are comparing 8 different floor plans and I want them to write a paper about the plans. What should they analyze about them?

1) Total conditioned area (heated and/or cooled) in square feet 2)Kitchen efficiency – ideally there should be a unilateral triangle between the stove, frig and sink 3)traffic flow – you should never have to go thru a bedroom to get to another room 4) number of baths and half baths – ideally even a 2 BR home should have at least 1.5 5) garage size and location – attached/detached/front load/side load/garage access to kitchen 6) slab on grade, basement or crawl space 7) In northern climate, presence of a closet near the front entry door. 8) NO ROOM without a closet is designated as a bedroom 9)Adequacy of storage – particularly important when there is no basement 10) size and shape of rooms – can each bedroom accommodate twin beds or a queen bed and a dresser? Room shape is important – rooms with other than 90 degree intersecting walls waste space and are difficult to furnish.
