I want to start building doll houses, what tools and supplies would I need?

August 6, 2010 - 1:47 pm 3 Comments

I need to know specifics about what type of wood to use, since I haven’t done a project like this before. Would a nail gun work for this? I’ve used one before so I know how to work with it. Where can I find a good book on building doll houses? I’ve built a few elaborate things before without a guide, but they were on a much larger scale. :) (Iguana habitat)
Thanks so much!

For the material, I’d suggest some 1/4" panel board that can be painted and is not too expensive. A brad nailer would work better than a nail gun just from the size of the nails. You will also need a square, tape measure, saw, work bench, clamps, glue, scroll saw, and sander. Add paint brushes, primer, and different colors of paint.
As to some plans and instruction, go to the public library and ask for some craft books and DIY books. They may need to be ordered from a main warehouse so call first.

What does houses mean in the astrological chart?

August 6, 2010 - 1:43 pm 2 Comments

I always hear about houses and never understood what they are.

I know the planets from the sun to the rising but houses?

If you look at a certain planet in your chart, it’s in a certain sign and house. The planet it’s in shows the characteristics the planet will take on. The house the planet is in will show were the energy of that particular planet will focus.

Go to astrologynumerology.com and you can read up on houses, how they work and what each house represents.

Astrology is very in depth, beyond just sun signs. The more research you do, the more you will understand how it works.

How many houses do the average couple look at before making a choice?

August 6, 2010 - 1:43 pm 13 Comments

We have looked at 3 houses and will look at 3 more next week. I really loved the 3rd house I looked at. I feel like I’m rushing. Should I look at alot. Around 15-20 or more? Help!

Relax, first of all.
It depends. I live in a community where we didn’t have the ability to look at 20. If you like the third one you looked at, look at a few more, by all means. But don’t rule out the third one just because you haven’t "met your quota".

ALSO…..I see people make this mistake all the time. They spend too much on their first house or they build it. I think building your first house is a mistake. You should look at your first house nowadays as your FIRST house. Not your last house and not your only house. Just your first house. Probably, you will build down the road. I think it’s dumb when people build a house young because 20 years down the road it will be dated and then they will feel they have to build another one. Buy once. Build once. That’s more economical.

OK, that said, take the stress off. Average homeowner owns a home 7 years. We owned our first home 10. It was wonderful, but the day came it was time to move. Look for an existing home that is in a neighborhood where it will retain good resale value down the road. Look to see that it is in an area where it doesn’t flood, make sure there are no structural problems like bad foundation, bad trusses in the attic, drainage problems, water and soil line problems. Be thinking that this is your FIRST house and someday, maybe in 10 years, you’ll be putting it back on the market.
Anything else I can do to offer help, write me at fortitudinousskeptic@yahoo.com
I was once a first-time homebuyer too. Since then we’ve bought and sold properties and refinanced several times. By the way, the first home we bought was probably the third one we looked at. It worked beautifully for us for 10 years. Relax. :)

How should I go about cleaning houses?

August 6, 2010 - 1:40 pm 6 Comments

I am a teenager (17) and I have been looking for a part time job since January but have had no luck. I believe that cleaning houses would be a good job but I am not sure how to get started. I would like to clean local homes in my area and I am willing to clean any rooms that need it. And I would also bring my own supplies. I was thinking of posting on craigslist. Would this be a good idea? Would this be a probable venture for a teen?

It is a good idea, but make sure you set limits! Will you be doing light cleaning? Household chores? Heavy duty cleaning? Whole houses?

It sounds wonderful, but you must be very explicit in your rates and services, otherwise someone will eventually take advantage of you.

How do I start the process into looking for foreclosed houses?

August 6, 2010 - 1:40 pm 2 Comments

I am really interested in buying a foreclosed house because there are so many where I live. (I live in Metro Detroit) Should I try to contact a realitor to get me started since most of the houses I see are owned by the bank, or are there books that can help me? Im not trying to by and flip but maybe buy a nice cheap house that I can re-sell when the market picks back up in a few years.

Start with your County Clerk’s office. They will be able to tell you what homes are about to foreclose. This info is public record and is available to you free of charge. Where I live it is right on their website, with date of sale and minimum bid. If you choose to bid you are doing so blind (you can not go inside the property before).

If the homes have already gone back into the bank’s possession (REO) any Realtor can show you the house, just like any other listing.

Which category of houses are most hit by falling prices and when would the downward trend stop?

August 6, 2010 - 1:39 pm 5 Comments

House prices are falling at an alarming rate and the higher end of the market seem to be hit the hardest. When will this stop and what can goverment do to intervene to protect peoples houses and house values.
Is the Australian Housing market also hit with dropping prices?

Yuppi flats It will stop when folk stop pay over inflated prices

Being that the prices of houses are dropping shouldnt the price of rent drop?

August 5, 2010 - 4:42 pm 4 Comments

It seems more and more individuals would be paying cheaper rent right? More houses that are in foreclosure etc, could be turned into rental properties, or rooms that are for rent?

Good question! In the long run, there is a relationship between property values and rents. But not in the short run. The reason is that if your landlord bought when house prices were high, his costs will be high and stay high, and so his rents will have to be high in order to cover them. And a lot of landlords will be in this situation. So I don’t expect rents to fall very much. In fact, the opposite may be true, because if people can’t afford to buy their own house, they have to stay in the rental market. If there are lots of tenants looking for places to rent, it will keep rents high.
