What is the difference between a family room and a living room?

August 15, 2010 - 1:27 am 7 Comments

A lot of homes seem to have both. What’s the difference? What is supposed to be done in each room? Can someone watch tv in the living room, or is that just for the family room?

What color curtains should i get for my living room?

August 6, 2010 - 2:13 pm 10 Comments

My sofa’s are beige and I have a few chocolate, green, and white accents. I really want to paint the walls a nice soft neutral green color. But I also want to keep the room as bright and airy as possible. Should i do white curtains, or green? Or if you have any ideas for other colors i could use. The curtains will go up in my living room and sliding door off my dining room. Also, my kitchen cabinets are expresso so maybe a dark color wouldn’t work.

I have sage green walls (Sherwin Williams Clary Sage) and my curtains are gold with white sheers underneath. I was also considering natural linen curtains – those might work for you.

What color should I paint my new living room?

August 6, 2010 - 2:04 pm 10 Comments

I’ll be moving in a few weeks into a small-ish condo, with 3 large windows on one side. The kitchen, dining area, and living area is one big room, about 20 x 20. I’ll be buying some very dark leather furniture, and a dark colored dining-pub with chairs. Also, the hardwood is an auburn color, and the cabinets in the kitchen are sort of a medium-auburn color. Since this is all in one large room, what color should I choose??? I’m so HORRIBLE at this stuff!

A nice warm brown would be nice.

The color "glazed pecan" in that link sounds nice.

How do I make my living room soundproof. I want to stop big bass sound coming from my neighbor.?

August 6, 2010 - 2:04 pm 3 Comments

There is a wall between my living room and his.

Sound can leak through anything. And the most popular place sound can escape through is the foundation. You see, walls are usually set ON the foundation making a tiny little slit for sound to come through underneath the wall. Although, the only way I know of to make a sound proof room is by building the wall on the ground without foundation. Forcing the sound to travel down into the foundation under the wall and back up the other side, which is very unlikely. But the only way you can do that is by having the wall either concrete or some other material besides wood, or else you have a MAJOR termite and strusture problem.

How can I air out living room and make it smell good?

August 6, 2010 - 2:04 pm 14 Comments

Im in college, and just moved into a new house with some roomates.
The only windows are found in the bedrooms, and the front hallway and living room always feel stuffy and smelly, even though I try to keep the area clean.
What can I do to help air it out and make it smell better? Keep in mind that there aren’t any windows around there.

I have a Glade plug in but that only makes everything smell more funky.
the whole house has wood flooring.

Give it a good cleaning with a cleaner and disinfectant(lysol) , even though the windows are in the bedrooms get the others to open them for a few hours while home. wash the floors, ceiling and walls. paint with a new color (lighter color) Get the furniture that is cloth material steam cleaned and pull up any old carpet. Once you done all of this add some oil essentials to some candles holders, heat the oils for a few minutes each day. fabreeze or use scented lysol cleaner on clothed furniture. Clean on a regular basis, get the others to help with the cleaning too.

Where do I place ceiling speakers in my living room?

August 6, 2010 - 2:04 pm 3 Comments

I have two ceiling speakers that I"m looking to use for just general music listening. I have a long room, about 35′ long, which is a combined living room / dining room. There is no one spot that I plan to sit and listen; sometimes I’ll be in the dining room area, sometimes in the living room. Where would be a good place to place the two speakers? Right in the middle of the room? On one end and on the other?

i’ll have to agree with the guy above me with 4 in each corner or 1 in each room

How do I paint my living room/dining combination?

August 6, 2010 - 1:56 pm 2 Comments

I have an open floor plan. From the entry you see my living room and dining room. I have painted the living room in light and a darker green with yellow undertones, but would like to make my dining room look "apart" from the living room without using a color that "doesn’t go" with the living room. What color should I use or should i continue the darker green? My carpet is taupe, and the sofa and chairs are raspberry with green.

The living room is 22 x 15 and the dining room is 12 x 12.

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

A neutral like "anew gray" (# 7030) might be a great color choice.

You can also take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & for $5 they’ll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

What can I do to make the cathedral ceiling in my living room pop out?

August 6, 2010 - 1:56 pm 1 Comment

I simply love the idea of the high ceiling, but white is really not my thing. I have used a dark satin (mahagony) material for my curtains, with an off-white netting to back it up. This is a split level and the wood work is absolutely gorgeous, esp the hardwood in the living room.
I need to redo my sofas with slipcovers (never mind what colour they are right now, but I never got around to change them after I moved here)
But the white on the walls has to go. I’d like to keep that room as cheerful as possible, because that’s how the other people living with me like it.

Its a medium sized room and the windows face the west. However, it is attached to the kitchen and the kitchen extends into the dining room/sunroom. So all three rooms are very airy.

have a fake rustic or other wood support beam made and installed in cathedral ceiling with paddle fan/light if possible beam will pull eyes upward

How do I paint a living room wall?

August 6, 2010 - 1:56 pm 2 Comments

From start to finish. Can someone please tell me. I am getting my first apartment soon and I want to paint an accent wall in the living room. I have never painted before so I could really use detailed responses ie: materials (BESIDES the paint lol). Thank you very much all, Jas
I am going to paint the wall basically hot pink and most likely a high gloss because I do not like dry to the touch paint.

My husband says you might look into an egg shell, or semi gloss, because it will be easier to paint over when you leave. Supplies paint, measure the wall (height by length) to get the square footage of the wall so you will know how much paint you need. The side of the can should tell you how much a gallon is supposed to cover. Plastic Drop cloth so paint won’t spill on carpet. Do not use an old sheet because paint might seep through. Three inch angled paint brush, for cutting in the edges. Get one for laytex or oil or a universal one. Roller, extension pole to reach high places. Do you have smooth texture or medium or rough texture wall, so you know what type of roller to get. Get blue painters tape, two inch to put around the edges of the walls and light switches, and ceilings so you don’t smudge your edges. Paint tray, if you are going to re-use the paint tray, get a paint liner. Two inch putty knife and spackle to repair any damage to the walls from previous tenants, like nail holes. Look for a pourable paint can where the lid just twist off, it might be easier or get a screw driver or paint can opener, they cost about a dollar, and a hammer to get the lid back on if you don’t get the twist kind. You need a ladder depending on the height of the wall. Rags for drips or clean up. Sponge and sanding block. paint stirrers, be sure to get the paint shaken at the paint store. Now that we are ready to paint, remove plate covers, wall outlet covers, inspect wall for holes or gouges, and repair with spackle using two inch putty knife, allow to dry, then lightly sand using sanding sponge. (Depending on the wall color you are painting over,You might need a primer like kilz (latex), (the type of paint you buy should be latex as well) Plan on using two coats of paint. Tape off any moldings like window or doors, tape the corners of the adjorning walls so you don’t get paint on them. Using three inch angled brush, paint an edge three inches wide along the side of moldings, doors, windows, light sockets and wall sockets any place where the roller can’t reach. Make sure you tape off the ceiling too. Pour enough paint in paint pan only for half the pan, roll the roller in the paint until covered, work from left to right, starting at top and working your way down. Apply the paint using a "w" method, (You are moving the roller in a "w" not up and down,) doing about a three foot square section of painting at a time. Starting from left working to right fill in the "w". Then repeat, Keep re doing the roller and don’t get too much paint on it. Put the drop clothe as close to the base board as possible. Let it dry completely before doing second coat. It usually dries a little darker. Clean all your tools with soap and water. When you are done, gently remove painters tape and replace switch plates. Put plastic wrap over the paint can, before replacing the lid.
