What are some examples of modern day oppression?

August 6, 2010 - 1:54 pm 2 Comments

Hey. What are some examples of modern day oppression?

I know of women, and human trafficking…

Would the oppression of Jews in some cities be counted as one?

Do you have any other examples?
How can they be tied in to slavery in America in the 1800′s?

What are the characteristics of modern British poetry ?

August 6, 2010 - 1:49 pm 1 Comment

I need to know 6 defining characteristics of modern british poetry. I’m not using this as a way for people to do my homework for me, I’ve checked everywhere I can think of.
Thanks.

modern has no limits it shold be as creative as one can imagine here is the latest

CREATIVITY THY NAME IS POETRY

Sitting in the vastness of this wilderness,
I always wonder how creativity does endow,
As it helps human beings to pass time,
Thus this is how works my creation,
As I entertain myself with a new recreation.

When sitting in a sanctuary,
One thinks o f nothing else but archery,
Of people running around a butchery,
As if they think they were in a fishery,
Then some time later they think of debauchery,
As their mind wavers, they reach a monastery,
So that they may then wash away their imagery,
Thus they think of solace as their mastery,
Before they say Amen, what do you say about, witchery?
Coming to their final end, they all think of their obituary.

Wait lets get it straight,
Nothing should make us wait,
Except,
Guess what???? Or better still history,
What else can you add on, except bigotry?????

Next one will be ending in May,
As in say,
So think ahead,
Before your mind turns red,
Ere the snow falls when one is dead.

What are some examples in modern society of prosecution based only on suspicion with no evidence?

August 6, 2010 - 1:49 pm 1 Comment

Either that or persecution. I’m trying to compare it to the Salem witch trials in the 17th century when many people were accused by children as witches and were hung as a result. Any ideas of prosecution/persecution in modern society based only on suspicion? Could be anything from from recent 100 yrs or so.

Thanks in advance. Will give 10 points.

What is the best 3rd modern language to learn?

August 6, 2010 - 1:46 pm 2 Comments

I’m 14, live in London. I’m a native English speaker and I speak fluently in French and know a fair bit of Latin. Languages come quite easily to me and I want to learn a 3rd modern language, something that is different that will help me stand out from the crowd. Depending on how easy it is I may teach myself or might get a tutor. What would be the best language for me?

i would say either spanish or german, as these are what most schools teach and more people are learning them :)

How many calculations can a modern computer do ?

August 6, 2010 - 1:46 pm 2 Comments

Say there is a 1 Mb file and i want to multiply successive bytes together and want to do it 20 times. How long will it take ?

Also in general how many calculations(not floating point) can a modern computer do ?

1. You need to read the data. Which takes some time.
Note: 1Mb is 125 000 bytes. I guess that you wanted to write something like 1MiB (MiB = Mega-binary byte) instead of Mb (Mega bit).
Let’s ignore that.
2. You need to load it to the computing unit (ALU or something like that)
3. You need to request multiplication
4. You need to read the data.

I suggest 3 ways from here:
CPU (1 core, 1 ALU) – this is the only one that I will calculate
CPU (1 to 8 cores, n ALU’s, n FPU’s, very long optimization path)
GPU (let’s assume 1024 cores)

Multiplication is a binary operation… unless you wanted a decimal operation – which can be split into several instructions.
Assumption: CPU can make the multiplication in 1 cycle.
Assumption: GPU can load/multiply/return it in 1 pass as well

CPU can be ~1GHz => 1 000 000 000 000 cycles per second
20 000 multiplications would be performed in 1/50 000 000 part of the second (if I did correct math here ;) ).
GPU can do the same much faster.

Now let’s go back to the data load… HDD has usually transfer ~20MiB/s. Load time would be ~1s. Multiplication time would be very small when compared to this.

Note: Things like data loading, offset calculation, etc. would take some time. My guess is that it would still take less than 1.001 second including data loading.

How can I mix my modern writing style and imput with a midevil setting and plot?

August 6, 2010 - 1:46 pm 2 Comments

I love midevil based stories, but I have so many modern opinions I like to put into my writing, plus my style of writing is not very midevil-ish. If you could hint me in the right direction (with out giving me the answers cause i want to write this myself) that would be amazing.
Please and thank you!
=)

This is a delicate balancing act, since the speech patterns that were acceptable in times past now sound stilted and even pedantic to modern readers. For instance, back in Charles Dickens’s day, contractions were used only by the lower classes. But to write dialogue sans contractions nowadays sticks out like Ebenezer Scrooge at the office Christmas party.

It’s important to develop a good ear for the rhythm and flow of period dialogue, by reading extensively in period literature. Some people have had excellent success mimicking period dialogue (Patrick O’Brian comes to mind), but usually it’s best to find a happy medium. Give your dialogue just enough of an “antique” flavor to keep the reader in the period without bogging him down in alien speech patterns. For example, in the time period in which my recently released medieval novel Behold the Dawn is set, modern-day English was almost entirely unknown, so I had to find a speech pattern that would be intelligible to readers while still grounding them within the setting. For the most part, I accomplished this simply by a judicious use of appropriate dialect.. just enough to give the reader the sense that he was reading a medieval tale, but not enough to make the story incomprehensible.

What is the difference between Traditional Marketing and Modern Marketing?

August 6, 2010 - 1:46 pm 2 Comments

What is the difference between Traditional
Marketing and Modern Marketing? Give some examples of those
companies which are doing Business in India more than 50
years and how they changed from traditional marketing to
modern marketing.

Marketing as I understand is: creating awareness and demand for a product or services and using the supply chain management system, ensuring that it reaches the end user effectively. The Traditional marketing has a manufacturer, whole lot of middleman including traditional advertising and customers. Modern marketing has a manufacturer and customers without wwhich no business will function. But the middleman, advertisements and monitoring of demand and supply has undergone lots of changes. Big malls are directly supplying goods from manufacturers to consumers doing away with middlemen. MLMs and Direct Marketing have totally eliminated the middlemen and passing 60% of middlemen revenue to consumers who put some effort by way of word of mouth publicity. Modern communication tools are doing their bit of advertising and monitoring. End consumers get convenience.

How to can I make my room more modern?

August 6, 2010 - 1:43 pm 2 Comments

My bedroom is looking half modern half old, I need some help on making it look a bit more modern without spending a huge amount of money. Any suggestions?
MY wardrobe is looking fairly old, same with my blind…
I almost definitely will not replace my wardrobe so I need help on making it look more modern. My desk is glass and I need help cleaning it properly. Also the door is Victorian (I think) but is broken alot, so much that you can see through it. Thanks

Try these ideas….=)
Add a floor lamp that’s a bold color….
Add an ottoman to the seating arrangement ; in a bright color that will blend in with shades of the current colors….
Mirrors will make a room look bigger…
Group 6-8 framed photo’s,eye level,on the wall ; frames all the same color;black;gold;silver;brass;wood etc…(inexpensive frames can be found at Dollar Stores)….
Add plants or silk plants….
Cover a Couch or chair with a new slip cover…
Fresh or silk exotic flowers are a nice touch too..
=)
Clean the glass on your desk with 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water…use soft cloth..
Your Wardrobe could be draped on top with a square table cloth (or a piece of fabric, only angle the corners to fall so the points are in the center of each side of it,so the tips are about 10" down each side…….(hope that made sense) Putting tassles on each tip would be a nice touch too……then top that with a large plant or vase,or both…

Can you give me some modern ideas for a babyshower?

August 6, 2010 - 1:43 pm 7 Comments

I’m throwing a baby shower for my friend. I’ve been to countless babyshower’s in the past and they’re all the same and usually pretty boring if you ask me. Can you give me some ideas as far as new games and things to do to make it more modern and interesting instead of the same old boring babyshower? Thanks!

What modern novel is comparable to Phantom of the Opera?

August 6, 2010 - 1:43 pm 1 Comment

I am writing a research paper comparing a modern novel and a contemporary one, and I would like to use Phantom of the Opera. Does anyone know of a modern novel that has a similar theme, tone, setting, or plot?

Bel Canto.

I haven’t read it myself, but my mom’s been telling me about it for a while.

It’s about a Japanese bussiness man who really likes this one opera singer from an unnamed Latin American country so he gets her to sing for his birthday party at the country’s vice president’s house when a group of revoluionists in search for the president come and take everyone at the party hostage.

Ot is simalar because it is about holding an opera singer hostage.
