Should the Tory minister be prosecuted for illegally obtaining home office confidential material?

August 6, 2010 - 1:43 pm 12 Comments

bearing in mind the tories when in govt gleefully prosecuted numerous people who leaked things to the press

Or should MPs be above the law (again)
Claw… I never said labour MPs I said other people and if you read the last part of my question it states clearly about MPS being above the law not tory MPS or Labour MPs but MPs in general.

should they not live by the same laws as everyone else

Not for the information- after all, it was only to be used for point scoring.

However, for the treason of setting up a means of obtaining information from the very office which controls national security. Yes he should be prosecuted and his next sh!te turned into a hedgehog

Has the expenses ruling against Mps claiming second homes etc, gone far enough?

August 6, 2010 - 1:43 pm 5 Comments

Who has given them the right to be different to us the public.I know we voted these creatures into government(well some did) but we never told them they could rob us at will.
As far as the present ruling on expenses is concerned, they are far from what really is required. These individuals need to governed by law as to any claim of expenses is concerned and not further "rules".
We have seen to our cost, how arrogant and contempt they are in their defence of fiddling the tax payer.
Their past conduct should be noted and any further dishonest activities should be dealt with in a court of law, full stop.

alternative to mps second homes?

August 6, 2010 - 1:42 pm 3 Comments

Why don’t the government section of a portion of the house of commons and convert it into living quarters ( like section housing for police officers). If they had to go to westminister then they could all stay there.
Then there would be no need to screw us all for expenses so they can all build up their property portfolio.

they dont have to have any homes.

Make them do what every person travelling to london has to do in those cases.

Make them use web/tv conferencing.

Or make them travel like every other sod has too

Is this a good way to stop MPs claiming dubious expenses?

August 6, 2010 - 1:38 pm 1 Comment

Rather than have them all go to London, let them stay at home and only conduct the business of the House of Commons via internet video conferencing. This way they only need one home. They only need attend the house for the Queen’s Speech and the Finance Bill.

This would mean only one home is necessary, which they can fund form their wages like the rest of us have to.
In all fairness few seem to make the point that the UK actually pays far less for its politicians than most other western nations do.

we are not going to stop it
they are on the gravy train and wont be stopping to let us check them out

they make the rules and we pay for them

we pay for them and should rule them , when did they become our masters
we should elect new members of Parliament

i demand a revolution, cheaper members of parliment now

Characters of Cuddeford and the Home Secretary in Murmuring Judges by David Hare?

August 6, 2010 - 1:38 pm 1 Comment

Does anyone know what kind of character Cuddeford and the Home Secretary (Charles Kendrick MP) are in this play?

Specifically, what class they might be from i.e. upper class? middle class? wealthy or not…?

not SURE but i think they are both upper class, Cuddeford stereotypes all criminals as ‘ordinary common-as-muck individuals’ that are ‘quite ghastly’ and this clearly shows he is out of touch with society. With these views Cuddeford is open to prejudice and discrimination and will be likely to pass out-of-touch, harsh sentences on criminals. The Home secretary doesnt really care about the criminals and is also high class and out of touch- got that from

Was Labour right to try and talk about class war when one of their MPs claimed for a bell tower?

August 6, 2010 - 1:38 pm 8 Comments

"Quentin Davies, the Defence Minister, included the £20,000 cost of repairing a bell tower at the 18th century listed mansion he designated as his second home with his claim for second home expenses. "

Very working class of him!

MPs’ second homes and the Housing downturn – will they take the losses as well as the profits ?

August 6, 2010 - 1:37 pm 9 Comments

There are no losses for our MPs, there will be a kitty somewhere, where they can claim losses. This of course will be the tax payers money, our MPs are greedy, useless, lazy morons. If things get to bad for them they will increase council tax, in fact they will increase tax on everything, gotta help our MPs stay comfortable don’t you know, god forbid they should have to live like us Little muggles x

Should MPs be given a central apartment block in London in which they could all stay?

August 6, 2010 - 1:35 pm 15 Comments

therefore not needing another home in London. Like a hall of residence type thing. Wouldn’t this save lots of taxes?

Since the expenses scandal outbreak, this has seemed to be the most logical solution to me. The government own the building, MP’s stay in it free of charge and therefore don’t need expenses for accomodation; then everyone’s on the same boat!
I know thats what I would do if i was PM :)

MP’s & 2nd home , would this be a reasonable solution ?

August 6, 2010 - 1:34 pm 9 Comments

Let the current situation continue with a little revision (see footnote)

Expenses relating to home refurbishment , maintenance and alterations be subject to the applicant agreeing to reimburse the Government coffers 10% of the sale value of the home if and when it is sold .

This then turns the current shambles of the expenses disgrace into a profitable business venture , MP’s would still benefit from their privileges but the Gov as a whole would benefit from the individual MP’s greed .

Does this make sense ?

(footnote) i see no reason why someones cleaning bill should be seen as anything other than a personal expense , if you don’t want to pay it then clean up your own bloody mess Mr PM !

Increase their wages a bit (whatever people say £65k isn’t much to run two homes on, travel etc etc) and make them pay their own way on most things.

Give a second home allowance to people who are outside of reasonable commuting time, but only to fund the cost of rent or mortgage and council tax, not to cover satellite TV, repairs and decorating. Make them nominate a first and second home when they’re elected, then any change to that status should need an application to the Speaker’s Office or Parliamentary Standards for approval.

The cost of commuting to and from their constituency to Westminster should be covered by expenses, as should any other travel on official government or parliamentary business. And a small allowance for meals while staying away from either of their homes on official business should be paid. Whenever I’ve had to stay overnight on company business I’ve always had a basic meal paid for, and I suspect many others are in the same situation, so denying it to MPs would be a tad spiteful.

The challenge is striking a balance between the current situation where MPs are basically taking the piss and the other extreme which would be very, very few people being able to afford to be MPs. I don’t like MPs claiming for their cat’s food, but I’d take the situation we have currently over limiting being an MP to only the very richest in society.
