Union Pacific 4-8-4 844 leads the Oroville to Portola segment of the Western Heritage tour on the former Western Pacific route through the Feather River canyon. Despite the lousy weather, an absurd number of chasers clogged CA Route 70, resulting in stop and go traffic all the way from Belden to Keddie (a distance of 20 miles!).

This is an abbreviated version of my video as I had a few more clips past Quincy that I couldn’t fit within the 10-minute limit.

The opening celebration of APT6 featured reggae acts from across the Pacific, coinciding with the exhibition component of Pacific Reggae: Roots Beyond the Reef. Pacific Reggae is a vibrant form of contemporary expression that taps into the international circuit while celebrating unique local flavours. The associated exhibition Pacific Reggae: Roots Beyond the Reef presents a series of reggae performances and video clips, live and recorded, demonstrating this rich musical form.

Leading reggae musician O-shen headlined the opening event, which celebrated the vital connections reggae makes from Port Vila to Auckland and from Honolulu to Honiara.

O-Shen made an impact in Papua New Guinea with his 1997 debut and subsequently broke into the Hawaiian market with his 2000 album Iron Youth. His popularity throughout the Pacific rose with subsequent albums Rascal in Paradise and Rising Son, and his 2007 release 1 Rebel cemented his ranking as one of the regions premier reggae artists.

Pacific Reggae responds to the vital connections that musicians from Port Vila to Auckland and Honolulu to Honiara make with reggae culture. Much Pacific reggae maintains key structural similarities to Jamaican roots music, including one drop drumbeats, steady bass lines and chopping guitar, while the introduction of log drums, bone flutes, ukulele and electronic beats contribute to reggaes unique sound across the Pacific. The parallel developments of home-recording studios and a proliferating music-video industry in the region have enabled a reggae scene to flourish and assert its own distinctive style.

This is the second trip of my home made high altitude weather balloon photography project, Pacific Star.

The balloon was launched at 5:37pm (PST) from Oxnard, CA and reached an altitude of 125,000 feet snapping photos and recording video along the way.

The balloon burst, the parachute deployed, and the payload floated down for 35 minutes, landing near an old olive orchard Northeast of Santa Paula.

Atomic tests at the Nevada Proving Grounds (later the Nevada Test Site) show effects on well-kept homes, homes filled with trash and combustibles, and homes painted with reflective white paint. Asserts that cleanliness is an essential part of civil defense preparedness and that it increased survivability.
