How much does private Catholic elementary school cost per month ?

August 6, 2010 - 2:31 pm 14 Comments

Hello, my husband is Catholic and we are considering sending our child to private Catholic school when he is old enough to attend. Does anyone have any idea of how much it costs now ? We live in California in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Thanks !

It depends on the school. If you check their websites out, they will sometimes have the tuition costs listed. Also, ask if you qualify for scholarships!

What forms of private investment prospered as a result of the European Union and its lead up?

August 6, 2010 - 2:23 pm 2 Comments

I ask this strictly from an investment/capitalist standpoint. If you could go back in a time machine to a pre European Union, what what would you have invested in, or withdrawn from? Please no political bloviating, and please speak in terms of a private investor, not large imperial motives.

I would have invested capital in banks and insurance companies. actually i would have "purchased" some shares too. they are safe and if i had the legal age (i’m 14) i would have done so. at least in malta, banks and insurance companies seem very prosperous

What’s the difference between Private and Public Hospitals?

August 6, 2010 - 2:23 pm 8 Comments

What’s the difference between Private and Public Hospitals? Which one’s better to work at? What are the advantages and disadvantages of private and public hospitals?

Public hospitals are funded by the government and therefore cannot turn away patients. Private hospitals are privately funded and make their own rules. These are the hospitals that turn away homeless and uninsured patients, as the government doesn’t regulate them. So I guess which one is better to work at depends on how you feel about that.

What is the difference between a private number and a unknown number?

August 6, 2010 - 2:23 pm 2 Comments

I recently got a blackberry pearl and I have never even seen a "unknown" number until now. Most of the time, it says private but twice now it said "unknown." What is the difference between a private number and a unknown number?

A "private" number is one that the caller has blocked. An "unknown" number is one that the system can’t decipher for some reason; either it didn’t receive any data, or it just doesn’t know what to do with the data it receives. It could be a data error, or it could be a foreign call, although the data error is a lot more common.

What kind of Private loans should I look into?

August 6, 2010 - 2:22 pm 2 Comments

I am a full-time student, and I eventually might have to look into Private loans to help fund my college education and living expenses. What loans should I look for, and where should I look?

Jnaujo:

Honestly?

Any kind you can get.

The news is taking a long time to trickle down through the affected students, but the private educational loan market was eviscerated by the worldwide banking and lending crisis. At least 80% of the lenders who once made these loans have either folded, or are no longer accepting private loan applications. The lenders that have folded were many of the most active participants in this market – names like Astrive, Campus Door, My Rich Uncle, and NextStudent..

Other lenders have failed and been merged into other banking institutions – Wachovia is now part of Wells Fargo, but Wachovia had long since pulled out of the private educational loan market, anyway.

There are a handful of major lenders who are still accepting private student loan applications (don’t confuse this with the number of lenders who are still making Stafford and PLUS loans) – we’re talking Wells Fargo, Chase, Citi, and a few more.

You’ll need to be prepared for the fact that ALL of these lenders have tightened the screws on student lending – it is almost IMPOSSIBLE for students to qualify for a private educational loan without a cosigner. Even that’s not as simple as it sounds, because the lenders are quite picky about who they’ll accept as a cosigner, too.

Apply for the loan when you’ve registered for classes. Most lending products require that your loan be "certified", which means that the lender will need to contact your school to verify your enrollment, and to determine your Cost of Attendance and unmet need. You should anticipate a high probability of being asked for a cosigner, and be prepared to provide a highly creditworthy individual for this purpose.

I hope that helped – good luck.

Can personal or private jets fly in and out of commercial airports?

August 6, 2010 - 2:12 pm 12 Comments

Does a passenger on a private jet have to go through secruity at the airport in order to get to their plane?

Yes, private jets can fly in and out of commercial airports in the United States. They do not use the airline terminals. Instead they park at Fixed Base Operators (FBOs). The same type of security as the airlines use only exists at one airport that I know of. That is at Signature at Boston-Logan airport. It was installed after 9-11. There has been talk also of doing the same at Baltimore-Washington airport at another Signature there.

In the charter business, security is taken very seriously, however each airport conducts their security in different ways. For example, some FBOs will allow passengers to drive up to the aircraft, while other FBOs do not. The passengers are checked for identification and their names are checked against a "no fly" list, published by the government.

Many of the "high-profile" travelers who had routinely flown first-class before 9-11, have decided on either private, fractional, or charter flying to avoid the type of security, lines and delays common to commercial travel.

What income threshold is there for private high school financial aid?

August 6, 2010 - 2:12 pm 4 Comments

Our son is applying to private high schools in our city, which has a very high cost of living. The private school that he attends now has families who appear to be pretty well off who are receiving financial aid. Is there an income level above which you just shouldn’t bother applying? The whole process is mystifying, but with high school tuition here nearing $30k per year, we feel like we need help even with our relatively high income.

careers.scienceontheweb.net – it has detailed info how to apply for financial aid and scholarships to get more cash.

Are there any private charter aircraft a company can hire which will allow passengers to use their own phones?

August 6, 2010 - 2:12 pm 1 Comment

When travelling on a private chartered flight, are there any planes with the facility of being able to use your own mobile phones? Or do only have use of the onboard phone?

No.

The thing is the "use" of your mobile phone is not determined by the charter company, but by the actual design of the network that your moblile phone "talks to".

mobile phones are actually small radio transceivers (Transmitters/Receivers). When they are switched on, they boost their transmit power to high until they get a response from a cellular base station (like the silver rods you see on some tall masts). Unfortunately if the mobile phone is up high in an airplane its transmit power could try to connect to many different cellular base station and the network would then go crazy trying to work out which base station to connect your mobile phone to.

This is why, apart from the possible interference with the aircrafts electronic equipments (which are key to you being safe up there) is why airlines insist that mobile phones are switched off.

The "onboard phone" is actually a Satellite phone, which only "connects" up to one satellite and then back down to an earth based network.

Is it possible to get a private student loan without a credit history or a co-signer?

August 6, 2010 - 2:11 pm 3 Comments

I currently have no credit history, and no available co-signer for a private student loan. I have exhausted my availability of government sponsered Stafford loans and Pell grants. I need a private loan in the amount of around 2000 dollars to supplement the remainder of my tuition that will be paid out-of-pocket through working on nights and weekends in two jobs.

Honestly, your answer is going to be no. You will have to have fair credit and proof of income plus decent work history or a co-signer. They will also want your savings and checking account information to put your finances under a microscope. It is a pain…I went the federal loan route. I wish you the best of luck!

What are the private colleges in California worth looking into?

August 6, 2010 - 2:03 pm 1 Comment

I’m trying to compile my potential list of colleges, and I already have a list of UC schools and a rough list of Cal State/Cal Poly schools.

Please list some private colleges in California worth looking into and some Cal State/Cal Poly schools as well.

If you could add a brief description of each that would be so great!

Thanks everyone!

Pepperdine is a great school right near the beach. However, it is pretty expensive to go to.

Good Luck!
