What is the difference between a family room and a living room?

A lot of homes seem to have both. What’s the difference? What is supposed to be done in each room? Can someone watch tv in the living room, or is that just for the family room?

just the names. tv goes wherever most fit

The difference is what it’s called. My in-laws call their family room what I would call a living room.

Remember when the Emperor was like, "You can’t stop me, Darth Vader will become more powerful that either of us." Awesome scene dude.

In the houses in which I have lived, the living room is a somewhat more formal space for more formal entertaining, and the family room is casual. (A family room may also be called a "den".) When I was growing up, we always used both rooms fairly regularly, and sometimes we put the television into the living room or played there. However, our living room was definitely more elegantly decorated than the family room was and usually a lot neater.

Some people I’ve known have virtually never used their living rooms unless guests were visiting. My parents-in-law spent all their time in the den/family room and the adjacent breakfast room. (They rarely used their dining room either, except as a place to pile papers.)

A living room is usually found in the front of the house as soon as you walk into the front door, and is usually for "show"… most people who come into your house sees the living room first and get a first impression if it’s decorated nicely. Most of the people I know rarely use this room (which is also sometimes called a front room), unless they have a party and there just happens to be extra seating, which usually just consists of a couple couches, end tables and a coffee table. The family room is usually in the back of the house and close to the kitchen in a traditional home and is where you actually do your living, watching tv, etc.

the family room is for every day living area so it takes more abuse and the living room is saved more for when company comes over, so it looks nice
